Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is a procedure used to rebuild or strengthen areas of the jaw where bone has been lost or is not sufficient to support dental treatment. It is most commonly associated with dental implant planning, but may also be used to preserve bone after tooth removal or support overall oral health.

Why bone loss occurs

The jawbone relies on stimulation from teeth to maintain its volume and density. When a tooth is lost or removed, the surrounding bone can gradually shrink over time.

Bone loss may also occur due to:

  • Long-standing tooth loss

  • Advanced gum disease

  • Infection around a tooth or root

  • Trauma or previous dental extractions

  • Natural anatomical variation

In some cases, bone volume may also be insufficient from the outset when planning for dental implants.

When bone grafting is needed

Bone grafting may be recommended to:

  • Support placement of a dental implant

  • Restore bone height or width in a missing tooth area

  • Preserve bone following a tooth extraction

  • Improve long-term stability of future restorations

Each case is carefully assessed using clinical examination and, where required, 3D imaging (CBCT) to accurately evaluate bone levels and anatomy.

The bone grafting process

Bone grafting involves placing natural or synthetic bone material into the area where additional support is needed. Over time, this material integrates with your existing bone, helping to rebuild structure and strength.

Your treatment will typically involve:

  • Thorough assessment and 3D imaging where required

  • Local anaesthetic to ensure comfort

  • Placement of bone graft material into the targeted area

  • Protection of the site to allow healing and integration

  • Review and monitoring during the healing period

In some cases, a protective membrane may also be used to support healing and stability.

Types of bone grafting

Depending on your needs, different approaches may be used:

Socket preservation grafting

Placed immediately after tooth extraction to maintain bone volume

Localised ridge augmentation

To rebuild bone in a specific area for future treatment

Sinus-related grafting

In upper back teeth where additional bone height may be required for implants

We will explain the most appropriate option for your situation in detail during your consultation.

Healing and recovery

Healing times vary depending on the size and type of graft. In most cases, the area is allowed to heal for several months before further treatment, such as implant placement, is carried out.

During healing, you may experience:

  • Mild swelling or tenderness

  • Temporary dietary adjustments

  • A short recovery period depending on the complexity of the procedure

We provide clear aftercare instructions to support smooth healing and reduce any discomfort.

When specialist care is involved

More complex bone grafting cases may be referred to a specialist oral surgeon or periodontist, particularly where significant bone reconstruction is required.

In these situations, we coordinate closely with the specialist to ensure your treatment is well planned, clearly communicated, and seamlessly integrated into your overall care.

Supporting long-term outcomes

Bone grafting is often an important foundation step for treatments such as dental implants. By rebuilding bone where needed, we can help create a more stable and predictable environment for long-term restorative success.

Our focus is always on planning carefully, treating conservatively where possible, and ensuring the best possible outcome for your individual situation.

If you’ve been told you may need bone grafting or are planning for future treatment, our team is here to guide you. Contact Waipa Dental to book a consultation and take the first step toward building a strong, stable foundation for your smile.
