Crowns & Bridges
Crowns and bridges are fixed restorative treatments designed to rebuild damaged teeth, restore function, and improve the appearance of your smile. At Waipa Dental, we focus on creating restorations that are strong, natural-looking, and long-lasting, blending seamlessly with your existing teeth.
Dental crowns
A dental crown is a custom-made “cap” that fits over a damaged or weakened tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape, strength, and appearance while protecting it from further damage.
Crowns are commonly recommended when a tooth:
Has been heavily worn or broken
Has a large filling with limited remaining tooth structure
Has had root canal therapy
Is cracked or structurally compromised
Needs cosmetic improvement in shape or colour
We carefully design each crown to match your natural bite and surrounding teeth, so it feels comfortable and looks completely natural.
Crowns after root canal treatment
Teeth that have had root canal therapy are often more fragile over time. This is because the tooth no longer has an active blood supply inside, which can make it more prone to cracking or fracture under normal biting forces.
For this reason, a crown is commonly recommended after root canal treatment, particularly for back teeth that experience heavier chewing pressure.
A crown helps to:
Strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure
Reduce the risk of fracture
Restore full chewing function
Extend the long-term success of the root canal treatment
In many cases, placing a crown is an important final step in protecting the tooth and ensuring it can continue to function comfortably for many years.
We will always assess the tooth individually and recommend whether a crown is the most appropriate way to protect and restore it.
Dental bridges
A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring an artificial tooth to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. This restores both function and appearance, while helping maintain the alignment of surrounding teeth.
Bridges are a reliable, fixed option for tooth replacement and can be an excellent alternative when a dental implant is not suitable.
Implant crowns
A dental implant crown is a tooth replacement that sits on top of a dental implant placed in the jawbone. This option replaces both the root and the visible tooth, providing excellent stability, function, and long-term support for the surrounding bone.
Implant crowns are designed to look and feel like a natural tooth and are a highly predictable option for replacing missing teeth. We work closely with your implant provider or specialist surgeon where needed to ensure the final crown is precisely matched and well integrated into your bite and smile.
Materials we use
We prioritise modern, high-strength materials that deliver excellent aesthetics, durability, and long-term performance.
Most commonly, we use:
Zirconia crowns and bridges
Strong, highly aesthetic, and metal-free
E.max (all-ceramic) crowns and bridges
Highly aesthetic restorations designed to closely mimic the translucency of natural teeth, particularly well suited to front teeth and areas where appearance is a priority
Porcelain fused to ceramic options
(where appropriate) – combining strength with a natural appearance
Gold crowns
In selected cases where exceptional durability, strength, and long-term function are a priority. Gold remains one of the most reliable restorative materials, particularly for back teeth under heavy biting forces
We will always recommend the most suitable material based on the location of the tooth, bite forces, and your individual needs.
The treatment process
Crowns and bridges are completed over a few stages to ensure precision and a comfortable fit.
Your treatment will typically involve:
Thorough assessment and planning, including imaging if required
Gentle preparation of the tooth or teeth
Digital or traditional impressions
Placement of a temporary restoration to protect your teeth
Fitting of your custom-made crown, bridge, or implant crown
Final adjustments to ensure comfort and bite accuracy
Each restoration is carefully checked and refined to ensure it integrates naturally with your smile.
Aftercare and longevity
With good care, crowns and bridges can last many years. Maintaining healthy gums and regular dental visits is key to long-term success.
To care for your restoration:
Brush and floss daily (including around bridge and implant areas)
Attend regular check-ups and hygiene appointments
Avoid excessive force or habits like teeth grinding, we can provide protection if needed
Restoring confidence and function
Crowns, bridges, and implant crowns do more than restore teeth, they restore confidence, comfort, and the ability to eat and speak naturally. Our goal is always to provide restorations that feel so natural, you forget they’re there.
If you have a damaged or missing tooth, our team is here to help restore your smile with strength and confidence. Contact Waipa Dental to book a consultation and explore the best restorative option for you.
