Dental Hygiene & Periodontal Therapy

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease or periodontitis, is an infection that affects the gums and the bone that support your teeth. Your gums play a vital role in keeping your teeth firm and stable. When they are healthy, they form a protective seal around each tooth. When infection develops, that support system begins to weaken.

The earliest stage is called gingivitis, this is reversible. You might notice redness, swelling, or bleeding when brushing or flossing. It can seem mild or easy to ignore, especially if there’s no pain. If gingivitis is left, it can advance to the next stage called Periodontitis. Gums pull away from teeth, creating deep pockets that become infected. The body's immune system fights the bacteria, which causes the destruction of the bone and soft tissue holding the teeth. Teeth may become loose and require removal.

The good news is that when gum disease is identified early, it is very manageable. At Waipa Dental, we provide comprehensive assessments, professional hygiene cleans, and personalised advice to help you manage and prevent gum disease. If the condition has progressed, we offer targeted periodontal therapy to stabilise your gums and protect the underlying bone. We also provide guidance on effective home care and a maintenance schedule tailored to your needs, helping you keep your gums healthy long-term.

In cases where advanced treatment is required, we will refer you to a trusted periodontal specialist to ensure you receive the highest level of care. Our goal is not just to treat gum disease, it’s to prevent it from progressing.

If you notice bleeding gums, gum tenderness, persistent bad breath, or any changes in your gums, early attention makes treatment simpler, more comfortable, and more predictable.

We would love to help support you in keeping your gums healthy for life. Book a hygiene appointment with us today.
