It can seem mild or easy to ignore, especially if there’s no pain. If gingivitis is left, it can advance to the next stage called Periodontitis. Gums pull away from teeth, creating deep pockets that become infected. The body's immune system fights the bacteria, which causes the destruction of the bone and soft tissue holding the teeth. Teeth may become loose and require removal.
