Fissure Sealants
If you’ve ever looked closely at the back teeth, you’ll notice they’re not flat and smooth. They have tiny grooves and pits (called fissures) that are perfect little hiding spots for food and bacteria. Unfortunately, toothbrush bristles can’t always reach right down into these grooves — which means decay often starts here.
That’s where fissure sealants come in.
A sealant is a thin protective layer that gently flows into the grooves of the back teeth, sealing them off from food and bacteria. By covering these deep grooves, the tooth surface becomes smoother and much easier to keep clean.
The best part?
Sealants are quick, painless, and completely non-invasive. There’s no drilling and no needles, we simply clean the tooth, apply the sealant material, and harden it with a special light. The whole process usually only takes a few minutes per tooth.
Sealants are especially helpful for children and teenagers, as their newly erupted adult molars often have deeper grooves that can be more prone to decay. However, adults with deep fissures can benefit from them too.
At Waipa Dental, we love prevention. Fissure sealants are one of the simplest ways to help protect teeth before problems start, because keeping teeth healthy is always easier than fixing them later.
