Oral Cancer Screening
When most people think about a dental check-up, they think about teeth and gums. But there’s a lot more going on in the mouth than just teeth.
At Waipa Dental, we also check the soft tissues of your mouth, including your tongue, cheeks, lips and the floor and roof of your mouth. This is known as an oral cancer screening.
Oral cancer screening is a routine part of our dental examinations and is designed to look for any unusual changes in the tissues of the mouth. This might include patches, lumps, sores that don’t heal, or areas that look or feel different from normal.
The screening itself is quick, simple and painless. We carefully look around the mouth and may gently feel the tissues under the jaw and around the neck to check for anything unusual.
Most of the time, everything looks completely healthy. But if we do notice something that doesn’t look quite right, we may recommend monitoring the area or referring you to a specialist for further assessment. Often these changes turn out to be harmless, but checking them early is always important.
If you ever notice anything unusual in your mouth, such as a sore that won’t heal, a lump, or a persistent change, it’s always a good idea to have it checked. Our team is here to help keep not just your teeth healthy, but your whole mouth too.
