Oral Hygiene Education:
Looking After More Than Just Your Smile
Good oral hygiene is about far more than keeping your teeth looking nice, it plays a vital role in your overall health and wellbeing.
At its core, oral hygiene is about controlling the bacteria that naturally live in your mouth. When these bacteria are not effectively removed, they form plaque, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Over time, this can progress to inflammation, bleeding gums, bad breath, and even tooth loss.
What should you be doing?
Maintaining a healthy mouth doesn’t have to be complicated, but consistency is key. A good daily routine includes gently brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between your teeth using floss or interdental brushes, and staying mindful of your diet, particularly sugary or acidic foods and drinks.
Regular dental visits are just as important. Professional cleans remove hardened plaque (calculus) that cannot be removed at home, and routine examinations allow us to detect any issues early, before they become more serious.
The mouth–body connection
Your oral health is closely linked to your overall health. Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) is a chronic inflammatory condition, and research has shown associations between gum disease and systemic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and complications in pregnancy.
Inflammation and bacteria from the gums can enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting other parts of the body. While oral health alone doesn’t cause these conditions, it can contribute to their severity and make them harder to manage.
This means that taking care of your gums isn’t just about your mouth, it’s an important part of looking after your whole body.
