Root Canal Therapy (Endodontics)

Root canal therapy is a highly effective way to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be removed. While it’s often associated with discomfort, modern techniques mean treatment is typically no more uncomfortable than having a filling.

At Waipa Dental, we combine a calm, patient-focused approach with advanced technology, helping you get out of pain while preserving your natural tooth with care and attention to detail.

What is root canal therapy?

Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When this tissue becomes inflamed or infected, usually due to deep decay, cracks, or trauma, it can cause significant pain and sensitivity.

Root canal therapy involves carefully removing the infected tissue, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and sealing it to prevent further infection. This allows the tooth to be retained rather than extracted.

Signs you may need treatment

Not all teeth show obvious symptoms, but common signs include:

  • Persistent or severe toothache

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers

  • Pain when biting or chewing

  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums

  • Darkening of the tooth

In some cases, infection can be present without pain, which is why regular examinations are important.

Care guided by detail and technology

Root canal treatment relies on a thorough understanding of the internal structure of each tooth, which can vary significantly from person to person.

To support this, we utilise advanced technology where appropriate. A dental microscope allows for enhanced visibility, helping us identify and treat fine or hidden canals. We also use 3D imaging (CBCT) to assess the shape of the roots and surrounding structures, particularly in more complex cases.

This allows for a more complete and carefully considered treatment, especially when the anatomy is less straightforward.

When a specialist may be recommended

Some root canal cases are more complex than others. Teeth with intricate canal systems, difficult anatomy, or previous root canal treatment may require additional expertise.

In these situations, or where specific medical considerations are involved, we may refer you to a specialist endodontist. This ensures you receive the highest level of care for more complex cases.

What to expect

We understand that many patients feel anxious about root canal treatment. Our focus is on making the experience as comfortable and predictable as possible.

Root canal treatment is typically completed over two appointments. This allows time to thoroughly clean and disinfect the tooth before it is sealed. In some cases, particularly if the infection is more advanced or the anatomy is more complex, additional visits may be required to achieve the best outcome.

Your treatment will generally involve:

  • Thorough assessment and imaging

  • Gentle numbing of the area

  • Careful cleaning and shaping of the root canals

  • Placement of medication within the tooth (if required)

  • Sealing of the canals and placement of a temporary or permanent restoration

Our goal is to relieve pain while preserving your natural tooth.

After your treatment

It’s normal to experience some mild tenderness for a few days following treatment, especially when biting.

To protect the tooth long-term:

  • A crown is often recommended to strengthen and protect the tooth

  • Maintain good oral hygiene and regular dental visits

  • Avoid excessive biting pressure until the final restoration is completed

With proper care, a root canal treated tooth can last many years.

Why saving the tooth matters

Whenever possible, keeping your natural tooth is the best option for maintaining normal function and alignment. Root canal therapy allows you to avoid extraction while eliminating infection and discomfort.

If you’re experiencing tooth pain or have been advised to consider root canal treatment, our team is here to help. Contact Waipa Dental to book an assessment and take the next step toward relieving discomfort and saving your natural tooth.
