TMJ, Jaw & Bite Assessment

Your jaw, teeth, and muscles all work together as part of a finely balanced system. When this balance is disrupted, it can lead to jaw pain, headaches, muscle tension, worn teeth, and discomfort when chewing.

At Waipa Dental, we take a careful, whole-mouth approach to understanding jaw function and bite relationships, focusing on identifying the cause of symptoms, not just managing the effects. Where appropriate, we also work alongside other health professionals to support long-term improvement.

What is the TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your lower jaw to your skull and allows you to speak, chew, and move your jaw comfortably. Because this joint is used constantly throughout the day, even small changes in alignment or muscle function can lead to noticeable symptoms.

Common signs of TMJ or bite-related issues

You may benefit from an assessment if you experience:

  • Jaw pain or tightness

  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds in the jaw

  • Headaches, particularly around the temples

  • Facial or neck muscle tension

  • Tooth wear or sensitivity

  • Discomfort when chewing or yawning

  • A feeling that your bite is “not quite right”

These symptoms can develop gradually and are often linked to a combination of bite forces, grinding, stress, or jaw position.

Understanding your bite

Your bite (how your teeth meet) plays a key role in how your jaw functions. If there is imbalance in the bite, it can place extra strain on the jaw joints and surrounding muscles over time.

We carry out a detailed assessment of your teeth, jaw movement, and muscle function to better understand how everything is working together. This allows us to identify contributing factors rather than treating symptoms in isolation.

A careful, diagnostic approach

Every patient presents differently, so our approach is always tailored.

Your assessment may include:

  • A detailed clinical examination

  • Evaluation of jaw movement and muscle tenderness

  • Assessment of tooth wear patterns

  • Bite analysis

  • Imaging if required to further assess joint or tooth structure

This helps us build a complete picture of what may be contributing to your symptoms.

Physiotherapy and supportive care

In many cases, TMJ symptoms are closely linked to muscle tension and jaw function rather than the joint alone. Because of this, physiotherapy can play an important role in treatment.

We may recommend referral to a physiotherapist experienced in jaw and facial muscle therapy to help:

  • Release muscle tension in the jaw, neck, and shoulders

  • Improve jaw mobility and function

  • Support posture-related contributing factors

  • Reduce strain on the TMJ over time

This collaborative approach can significantly improve outcomes, particularly for patients with ongoing or muscular-related symptoms.

TMJ exercises and home care

Simple exercises and self-care strategies can also help reduce symptoms and support recovery.

We may guide you through tailored TMJ exercises such as:

  • Gentle jaw opening and closing control exercises

  • Relaxation techniques for jaw muscles

  • Stretching and mobility exercises

  • Awareness and reduction of clenching habits

These exercises are designed to improve coordination, reduce muscle overuse, and support long-term stability.

Management and treatment options

Treatment will depend entirely on your individual findings and symptoms. In many cases, TMJ and bite-related issues can be managed conservatively.

Options may include:

  • Custom night guards or splints to reduce grinding and muscle strain

  • Bite adjustments where appropriate

  • Physiotherapy referral and collaborative care

  • TMJ exercises and behavioural strategies

  • Restorative treatment to rebuild worn or damaged teeth

  • Ongoing monitoring and review

Our goal is always to reduce strain, improve comfort, and protect your teeth long-term.

A conservative philosophy

We take a cautious and evidence-based approach to TMJ and bite issues. In many cases, simple, non-invasive treatment can make a significant difference.

More complex cases may require multidisciplinary care, and we will always refer appropriately if specialist input is needed

Supporting long-term comfort

Jaw and bite issues are often long-term conditions that benefit from ongoing management rather than one-off treatment. Our focus is on creating stability, reducing symptoms, and supporting your long-term comfort and function.

If you’re experiencing jaw discomfort, headaches, or bite concerns, our team is here to help. Contact Waipa Dental to book an assessment and take the first step toward greater comfort and long-term stability.
