Tooth Extractions

At Waipa Dental, our priority is always to preserve your natural teeth wherever possible. However, when a tooth is no longer healthy or restorable, a gentle extraction can be the best step toward relieving pain and protecting your overall oral health.

We focus on making the experience as comfortable, calm, and stress-free as possible, with clear communication and a supportive approach throughout.

When is an extraction needed?

Tooth removal is typically recommended when a tooth cannot be predictably restored or may be affecting the health of surrounding teeth.

You may require an extraction if you have:

  • A severely decayed or damaged tooth

  • Advanced gum disease affecting tooth support

  • A broken tooth that cannot be repaired

  • Overcrowding (sometimes prior to orthodontic treatment)

  • Problematic or painful wisdom teeth

If there are alternative treatment options available, we will always discuss these with you first.

Wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the most common teeth requiring extraction. They often don’t have enough space to come through properly, which can lead to pain, swelling, infection, or damage to neighbouring teeth.

Some wisdom teeth are straightforward to remove, while others can be more complex, particularly if they are impacted (trapped under the gum or bone), angled, or located close to important anatomical structures.

We will assess your individual situation carefully and talk you through whether removal is recommended, and what that process will involve.

A considered, clinical approach

No two extractions are the same. The position of the tooth, the shape of the roots, and surrounding anatomy can all influence how straightforward a procedure is.

Some teeth have more complex root structures or sit close to nerves or sinuses, which requires additional planning and care. In certain cases, particularly for complex wisdom teeth or where there are specific medical considerations, we may recommend referral to a trusted specialist oral surgeon.

This ensures you receive the safest and most appropriate care for your situation.

What to expect

We understand that the idea of an extraction can feel overwhelming. Our approach is designed to minimise discomfort and help you feel at ease from the moment you arrive.

Your treatment will typically involve:

  • Thorough assessment and imaging to plan your care

  • Gentle numbing of the area to ensure comfort

  • Careful, controlled removal of the tooth

  • Clear guidance and support during your recovery

We take our time to ensure the procedure is as smooth and comfortable as possible.

After your extraction

Good aftercare is essential for healing. We will provide you with clear, personalised instructions, but generally you can expect:

  • Mild discomfort once the anaesthetic wears off

  • Some swelling or tenderness for a few days

  • The need to avoid strenuous activity immediately after treatment

Most people recover quickly with the right care.

Replacing a missing tooth

If a tooth is removed, it’s important to consider your replacement options to maintain function and prevent shifting of surrounding teeth.

We can guide you through options such as:

  • Dental implants

  • Bridges

  • Partial dentures

We’ll help you choose a solution that suits your needs, lifestyle, and long-term oral health.
